Baxil and Jia by baxil Baxil and Jia by baxil
More of my old work being made public for the first time; this one a collaboration from 1999. Mixed media: a photo by me of a snowfield on Mount Lassen in California; hand-drawn/computer-colored dragon by me; hand-drawn and colored draconid by Erin Lynn (Elynne). Photoshop work to combine the elements by me.

Elynne and I began a poly relationship in 1999 and parted amicably about four years later. This representation of our respective inner/past-life selves was drawn early on, to celebrate our getting together.

The relationship taught both us a number of things about ourselves. Sadly, one of the lessons I didn't learn until later is that brown wings look retarded on me. My self-image has stayed pretty consistent through the years, but it took me a few palette swaps to settle back in on the green-and-sky-blue-with-red-eyeguards that worked right all along.

Interesting composition, a contrast between the icy cold of the snowfield and the warmth of the relationship. Was that intentional? :D

To be honest, I no longer remember why I picked that particular image ... I think it was because that was what was available; this was in the days of digital cameras' infancy, and so I scanned a printed photo from my most recent hiking trip. It was probably the one with the best balance of light and shadow for what I needed.

Wow, that background looks so realistic. you must have spent hours shading it.

I only wish I had that sort of patience! It's a photograph I took of a snowfield on the shady side of Mount Lassen -- I added a tiny amount of shadow around the foreground figures but most of the photo is completely unretouched.

Thanks for stopping by :)
